Redbridge libraries to hold Women’s History Month events

Events have been planned to mark a special month dedicated to women’s accomplishments.

Redbridge Libraries launched Women’s History Month, on Saturday and features an expert multi-tasker who not only survived a terrifying encounter with a murderer on a train, but has penned four novels.
Joan Ellis, of the Isle of Wight, will share common themes and similarities throughout her books about women from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
“All the women in my books are linked,” she said.
She adds how a teacher’s unkind comments, that she “would not amount to anything” spurred her to do well in life.

Joan became an award-winning advertising copywriter, performer, lecturer and comedy writer who has worked with Noel Fielding, Harry Enfield, Penelope Keith and Jennifer Saunders.
Joan will share her funny stories at A Women’s Wit, Wisdom and Pratfalls at Wanstead Library, Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead on Thursday, March 17, 7pm.

Redbridge Mayor, Cllr Barbara White, spoke of the importance of celebrating women’s history.
“Women are extremely important,” she said.
“As mayor the job has been absolutely fine, the only thing that happens is those who think my husband is the mayor.
“People are still old fashioned,” she added.
“We say manning this and manning that. Why can’t we use the word staffing?”
The mayor said she wishes the women of the borough shelter, warmth and a life free of violence and will added she will enjoy events on offer.
