Veteran Spencer strikes gold for Ilford

Ilford AC runner Spencer Hempsted struck gold after winning the over-40s men’s race at the Essex Veterans Championships, hosted by the club at Hainault Forest Country Park.

Hempsted crossed the line in 32 minutes 20 seconds and was ably supported by a solid run from Ray Dzikowski who finished seventh in 33.21.

Stephen Philcox was 16th in 34.38, while Neil Crisp closed the team in 25th spot after stopping the clock on 35.10 to record a team silver, just five points behind the winning team.

In the male over-50 race Iain Campbell ran at a commanding pace throughout on his way to winning the event with a time of 32.04, though the next best was Terry Knightley in 37.21 for 17th spot.

Andy Caton finished 24th in 37.52, while Stephen Parker closed the team out in 60th spot with a time of 42.28 as they finished fifth overall.

Other finishers included James O’Brien (41.15), Steve Cheal (43.47), Martin Clarke (46.02) and Graham Williams (48.18).

First home for Ilford in the women’s over-50 race was Dianne Crisp in 43.16 for 27th and was followed by Nicola Hopkinson, who placed 45th with a time of 45.36.

Next across the finishing line was Eileen Sheridan in 47.04 for 54th in her second cross country event, while Sally Gillam closed the team out in 63rd spot in 49.53 to help the ladies secure eighth place in the team event.

Pam Jones stopped the clock in 52.52 for 73rd overall – good enough for gold in her age group.
