Claire Bloom began the 2018 race season by winning the 55-59 age category at the Berkhamsted triathlon despite dreadful conditions.

With lakes too cold at this time of year for an open water swim, the race began with a 400m pool swim which Bloom completed in a time of seven minutes and 41 seconds.

Given the cold temperature, Bloom opted to layer up at the first transition, but despite taking extra time to put more clothes on, she was still almost frozen by the end of the 20k bike ride.

The course itself was hilly, quite technical and had a lot of gravel on the roads which made it really difficult to pick up any top speed, though finished in 40.13.

The run section took place on a true off-road course, with entrants having to navigate steps, hills, gates to open and plenty of mud, but Bloom clocked 40.13 for 91.53 overall to win her age category.

“It was a great start to the season, there’s lots more to come, but it was a change to put training in to practice,” she said.
