The day began with an intense battle under the sweltering heat between Rae Potter and Misa Corlett in the women’s singles, which tested mental and physical endurance, with Potter winning 6-4, 7-6.

The men’s singles event had 34 players enter and produced five entertaining rounds before a hotly-contested final on Sunday.

And in a repeat of last year’s final, Sam Roberts beat former champion Darren Lee in a marathon of a match 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.

Defending champions of the women’s doubles title, Carole Durcan and Ophelia Soares, just edged out Angela Shea and Potter, 7-6, 7-6 in a nail biting match which took over 2.5 hours.

The men’s doubles had 13 pairs which boiled down to an exciting encounter between a new pairing of Roberts and Lee against Roland Gurney and James Trueman.

Spectators were treated to a master class which ended with Roberts and Lee winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a fiercely contested display of quality doubles tennis.

The last event of the day saw last year’s champions Andy Antoniou and Katie Brant beat former champions Lee and Shea in the mixed doubles.

Due to the brutal heat and exhaustion from the previous two finals, Lee and Shea were forced to concede their match due to injury after an enthralling first set, where the score was deadlocked at 5-5.

Club tournament organisers Edwin El Guedj, Ophelia Soares and Roberts would like to thank all the club members who helped make the day a success.

Special thanks go to Lorinda Pagano for the BBQ, Sue Gregory, Vivian Sawyer and Paul Gerken for the food, Marco Pagano for umpiring and all the spectators for helping make the day a resounding success.

Linkside Tennis Club offers junior and adult coaching and welcomes new competitive and social players throughout the year.

Next up is the Veteran’s finals to be held on the weekend of September 15 followed by the Juniors tournament with finals on Saturday October 6. Further information is available online at
