Thrilling final in the Redbridge Afternoon League
South Woodford Bowls Club were crowned champions of the Redbridge Afternoon League after a thrilling final against Barley at Wanstead this week.
Bob Crout, Derek Ward, Jim Boyce and skip Bernie Wanger were always behind on their rink, trailing by nine shots after 15 ends, but they closed the gap over the last six ends to only lose 23-22.
It was a similar story on the other rink as Arthur Holt, Ray Morgan, Ron Williamson and skip Peter Barham fell 10-0 down after five ends.
South Woodford came out on top in six of the next nine ends, though, to draw level at 14-14 before a five count on the 15th end put Barley on top.
By the 18th end the score had moved to 21-15 but South Woodford rallied with a six to square matters once more and Barham’s team added six more shots on the next two ends to clinch a 27-21 victory.
That sealed a 49-44 win overall and saw South Woodford receive the RAL Shield and Brignal Trophy from Jim Rutter, league chairman.
