Hockey squad seal spot at regional finals

Bancroft’s School proved too strong for their hockey rivals at the Essex Indoor finals at New Hall in Chelmsford.

The under-18 boys’ squad played a controlled game and showed high skill levels and ability to break down the opposition teams, who all employed a very defensive system.

Captain Will Hopkins scored hat-tricks in convincing wins against New Hall (5-0) and Coopers’ Coborn (6-1) with Nathan Rose and Zayne Avril adding to the tally overall.

And it proved to be an outstanding team performance from a team which had not previously played together indoors.

Coach Andy MacLeod said: “We have not entered this tournament before and as a school have little experience of indoor hockey.

“Several of the boys have represented Old Loughtonians at indoor tournaments and this experience was clear in their performances.”

The Bancroft’s boys have now qualified for the East of England finals at the University of East Anglia in Norwich on December 11, where they will face qualifiers from Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Hertfordshire.

Bancroft’s: Max Sydenham, Dafydd Prole, Will Hopkins, Ben Margetson-Rushmore, Josh Beardwell, Nathan Rose, Jake Botha, Zayne Avril.
