Highams club begin new term with a trip to divisional new boys

Woodford begin their London Two North East campaign on Saturday when they head for divisional newcomers Basildon.

The Highams club ended last season in fine form, winning five of their last six matches to avoid relegation.

And with the start of the new league campaign fast approaching, head coach Tom Redfern wants Woodford to pick up where they left off last term.

“For us, pre-season was more about seeing us get better from last season and we’re looking to carry on from our last game of last season,” said Redfern.

“The boys have their own targets for the season and a positive start to the campaign will help them in their efforts to achieve that.

“There’s an element of the unknown about Basildon as they’ve come up from London Three Essex, but we want to start well from the get-go this season and not take a few weeks to get up to speed.”

While Woodford may be looking for an opening day win, coach Redfern is also hoping to see a strong display from the side against Basildon.

And the head coach believes if the Highams club give a good account of themselves on Saturday, it should lead to an opening-day success.

“There is always talk about turning in a good display because if you do that, you normally get the result you want,” he added.

“We’ll be chasing our best display on Saturday, as we will be in all games this season, and if we can perform to that level, then I’m confident we’ll do well.”
