Herons began new term by beating South Woodham Ferrers last weekend
Director of rugby David Wiggins says Wanstead are looking to give a better account of themselves at Romford & Gidea Park on Saturday compared to when they last faced the Crow Lane club in London Two North East.
The Herons hit the road for the first time this term this weekend, having beaten South Woodham Ferrers 50-10 at home last Saturday.
When the Roding Lane North club last visited Romford, they were held to a 29-29 draw in February.
Wiggins, though, is looking for a better result this time around at Crow Lane and wants his team to use that disappointing result as motivation.
“When we last played Romford, we didn’t cover ourselves in glory and that is something we are looking to rectify on Saturday,” he said.
Against South Woodham Ferrers last weekend, Wanstead ran in eight tries in total to cruise to an opening-day win.
Jacob King and Chad Harris both dotted down twice, while Jacob King, Liam Ball and Tony Sweeney also crossed and the Herons were awarded a penalty try.
The victory was certainly a show of intent from Wanstead against a South Woodham side who were relegated from London One North last term.
And Wiggins identified the aspects of the opening-day success that pleased him the most.
“To a man, they were all in very good from against South Woodham and what was most pleasing was the fitness levels,” added the director of rugby.
“We’ve aimed this season to try to improve the players’ fitness by 20 per cent and it showed against South Woodham as they weren’t flagging in the last 20 minutes.
“The aims in the first five games are always the same: don’t concede more than three tries, score four tries or more and don’t give away too many penalties from kickable positions.
“Against South Woodham, we were able to achieve all three and want that to continue this weekend.”
Should Wanstead achieve all of Wiggins’ aims again this weekend, it should hopefully lead to another victory.
