Woodford RFC brought the curtain down on their senior season for good by hosting touring Romanian side Focsani at the weekend.

Despite their being more than 1,600 miles between the Highams club and their Romanian counterparts, there are good links between the sides.

Current Woodford winger Denis Ciobanu hails from Romania and previously played for Focsani, who are his local team.

The Highams club also took a fifth team to Focsani while touring Romania last summer, and were keen to repay the favour.

The match between the clubs on Saturday drew a good crowd, with those in attendance also treated to an under-13s game prior to the men’s match kicking off.

Woodford won the men’s game, triumphing 41-15 with plenty of good rugby on show from both teams.

And with Ciobanu coming up against his old club, the winger was just grateful to have the opportunity to play against some familiar faces.

“We wanted to thank all the people who were involved in putting together the great event yesterday at Woodford RFC,” he told the club’s Facebook page.

“It is a great honour to be part of Woodford family. We can’t thank you enough for the great welcoming of the Romanian team and their families.

“Woodford has been a great host as always, everyone has put so much effort into it and we are very grateful.

“We give our thanks to ‘Porky’ (Richard Porter), Anne and Colin Granger, Dave Mawson, Paul Yates, Tracy and Terri, Sue and her team at the bar and many more who made this day a fabulous day. They were outstanding hosts.”

Club chairman Porter added: “Following Woodford’s tour to Focsani last year, this was the first time in over 20 tours that an opposition side had returned the visit to Woodford.

“We knew this would be a special occasion and we were determined to make it as enjoyable as possible for both teams and all the supporters.”
