Essex Canterbury Jack Premier: Mersea Island 22 Ilford Wanderers 21

Ilford Wanderers confirmed promotion from the Essex Canterbury Jack Premier, despite losing their final game of the season 22-21 at Mersea Island.

Wanderers took the lead when a poor Mersea kick was returned with interest, resulting in fly-half Alfie Waddems going over in the corner for a converted try.

However, a penalty and two tries saw Mersea storm back to hold a 15-7 lead at half time in the contest.

Early in the second half, a strong scrum from Ilford saw them edge towards the line, with skipper Jason Taylor eventually crossing.

Despite making some uncharacteristic errors, Wanderers benefited from a mistake by the hosts, with Tom Clancy collecting a loose Mersea pass before running in to score a converted try.

However, a late try for the hosts saw them snatch victory, though Ilford still had reason to celebrate anyway with the club back competing at London Three level again next term.
