Jordan Wigham praised the display of 17-year-old Tyler Ford off the bench

Romford & Gidea Park head coach Jordan Wigham saw plenty of positives from their win over Wanstead in the London Two North East on Saturday, but was disappointed with the way they lost control during the second half.

The two local rivals produced a close encounter at Crow Lane which ended 24-21 to the home side.

Park were 17-6 to the good at half time and despite going further ahead soon after the interval, Wanstead mounted a strong comeback and almost claimed a draw.

Wigham said: “It was a good opening 50 minutes for us and then we decided for some reason to go away from the game plan and let them back into a match we had full control of.

“The first half was one of the best performances I have seen by a Romford side since my time in charge.

“We had Tyler Ford make his debut on the wing from the bench and he has only recently turned 17, but he had a great game when he got on

“He showed real maturity for someone so young and could have bitten in on a few occasions, but played really well.”

Ford’s display was not the only plus point for Romford on Saturday, who claimed a first win of the campaign against their rivals.

Wanstead enjoyed plenty of success last season, but it was Wigham’s men who made the better start in this derby battle.

Ian Semain crossed over not once, but twice to put Park on top with full-back Jack MacVeigh adding the extras for both scores.

A penalty by MacVeigh extended Romford’s point total to 17 before Wanstead got some joy with two penalties before half time.

The hosts didn’t rest on their laurels after the restart with flanker Dwayne Lyn going over and MacVeigh again showing his class with the boot, but then the Herons fought back at Crow Lane.

After getting back to within three points of Romford, the final exchanges saw the away side push for a match-winning try.

It didn’t occur though, and Wigham and his squad were left to reflect on a pretty good day at the office.
