Herons make the trip to Coops this weekend

Wanstead head coach David Wiggins admits every game in the early weeks of London Two North East is a little step into the unknown for his side ahead of their trip to Old Cooperians this weekend.

After winning promotion last season, the Herons have started brightly and currently sit second in the table heading into Saturday’s game.

Part of that form may be down to the approach from the Roding Lane North club, with Wiggins saying they treat all opposition as if they are the leaders.

And the head coach says that because they are coming up against a lot of new sides this season compared to last.

“We’re new to the league, so we don’t know much about the opposition,” said Wiggins.

“We treat every game is if we’re playing the league leaders rather than focus on where they are in the league.”

Against Coops this weekend, Wanstead will look to build on a fine 57-10 win at home to Romford last Saturday.

The Herons returned to winning ways and ran in nine tries in total in the rout, with Tim Couglan in particular impressing Wiggins.

“I don’t normally like picking out individual players, but Tim was on fire against Romford and did everything right,” he added.

“He controlled the game from fly half and he is in good form at the minute.

“We dominated up front again and it was another match that ended with uncontested scrums.”

Wanstead enjoyed a week off in the build up to the win over Romford, allowing them to head into the game refreshed.

Wiggins believes that aided the Herons in the triumph, and also feels it has helped the team in training too.

“We worked hard in training and we’ll be working hard in training again this week,” he said.

“The boys are raising the bar all the time and when it comes to the set piece, we haven’t even scratched the surface yet. It all seems to be working well.”

Wiggins will hope Wanstead can earn consecutive league wins this weekend by beating Coops.

And if they can replicate their display against Romford, they will be on their way to doing just that.
