Joint-boss says Motormen were better side in defeat at Great Wakering

Redbridge joint-manager Dave Ross believes his team’s play merited something from their 1-0 defeat away to Great Wakering Rovers in the Ryman North.

Former Motormen striker Jacob Cleaver haunted his old side, scoring the only goal at Burroughs Park in the 16th minute to consign the visitors to a fifth successive league game without a win.

Despite the result, Ross believes it was a solid showing from the team that should have garnered a lot more than another defeat in their bid to avoid the drop.

“It was a good display and I felt we deserved at least a point from the match, if not all three,” said Ross.

“We had more chances, but failed to take them and paid the price when they took theirs. It’s the type of game we need to win if we want to stay in the Ryman North.”

Cleaver’s goal against his former team was well taken as the attacker clipped the ball over Redbridge goalkeeper Sam Sargeant, who is on loan from League Two side Leyton Orient.

But Ross believes the Motormen could have defended better in the build-up to Rovers’ winner and says it’s not the first time this season they have handed away a possible victory.

“We gifted them their goal and it’s always a worry when you make mistakes. We did the same against Cheshunt, gifting them a two goal lead,” he added.

“It’s OK if you’re scoring lots at the other end, but if you don’t it always leaves you on the back foot.

“Aside from that, we defended well and had a host of chances so there are positives to take from the game despite the result.”
