Redbridge manager George Christou can’t wait to finally get started in the Essex Senior League after cup competitions and a long time away from league action due to the pandemic.

The Motormen travel to Little Oakley for their season opener on Saturday as they look to build on their upturn of fortunes under Christou since he took over the reins despite the stop-start manner throughout the last two seasons.

“I’m looking forward to Saturday,” Christou said. “We don’t know much about Little Oakley apart from they have signed a few players on two-year deals, so that shows to us the club are showing some intent to progress and we now are just looking forward to it.”

Redbridge retained the Len Cordell Cup as they beat tenants Newbury Forest 3-1 in an annual pre-season fixture last weekend.

“The game against Newbury was excellent for both teams. It was played at a real good tempo and it felt like a league game at times," added Christou.

“Both teams wanted to win and it was played in a good spirit. They have some really good players over at Newbury and we wish them all the best for next season. The performance was good and it was a great feeling to retain the cup.”

The former Aveley Reserves manager has been pleased with how his side have played and dealt with tough situations throughout pre-season.

“Pre-season has been good, but tough as myself and two of my coaches got Covid, so the boys have had only one coach at the games on three occasions and have been excellent. The senior players have stepped up and really impressed me," he said.

“We’ve had some tough games this pre-season and we have seen some really good things.

“We have lost three players all to teams in step four which is fantastic for them but it now gives others a chance.

“I’m really happy with the squad. We are younger than we were last season but I am really impressed with it.”

Redbridge have been confirming their squad for the upcoming season on Twitter throughout the last few weeks.
