Athletics club hold annual handicap race
Rachel Halpin claimed top honours at Ilford AC’s annual Boxing Day cross-country handicap race at Chigwell Row.
Halpin, training for the 2015 London Marathon, showed her intent by running above expectations to finish in 32 minutes 49 seconds (net 29.49), more than a minute ahead of second-placed Declan Cullen (33.50; net 27.20).
Neil Crisp was third in 34.02, for a net time of 23.02.
The fastest actual time of the day was set by rising young star Ahmed Abdulle, who completed the very muddy 3.3-mile course in 20.42 to beat mentor Tom Gardner (20.48) as they finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
A total of 14 hardy members took part and entered into the festive spirit, with many running in Santa hats or reindeer antlers.
They included Billy Green (34.33), Doris Gaga (34.58), Julia Galea (35.01), Jenni Sheehan (35.05), Kevin Newell (35.09), Paul Emery (36.15), Di Crisp (36.15), Peter Spelman (40.15) and Pam Jones (40.57).
