Essex Open under-14s missed out on qualification for the national finals after a slow start at their regional event.

Needing to finish in the top two in their group of eight, they were 7-1 down against CFX at half time.

They rallied, but lost 9-6, and were then beaten 12-6 by Breakaways, before falling 4-1 down against Cobham.

Another fightback proved in vain in an 8-5 defeat, but they were on level terms with Telstars early on at 3-3, only to fall away and lost 13-4.

The next game was the most exciting as Essex drew 9-9 with The Downs, having led 9-6 with minutes to go.

The penultimate game saw Essex face a Falcons side still in with a chance of qualifying and beat them 6-4.

And in their final game Essex played their best netball of the day and won 17-2 in a game in which they totally dominated against a tired looking Whitton side.

But the day finished with Essex wondering what might have been with a better start to proceedings.
