Pam Jones showed her class for Ilford Athletics Club at the Brentwood 10km on Sunday, which doubled up as the Essex 10km Championship, winning a bronze medal in the F65-plus group by recording a time of 62 minutes 27 seconds.

Jones’ impressive feat was one of a number of strong displays by the club at the weekend. The race took place in the village of Blackmore and in rainy conditions.

Sam Rahman (35.46) headed the Ilford charge by coming 24th overall in a new personal best. Next home was Paul Holloway with a personal best of 37.23 – earning him 40th place overall.

Robin McNelis (37.44) finished in 46th and just behind was Steve Philcox (37.59) in 47th. Kevin Wotton and Neil Crisp also followed each other over the finish line with the pair both being given a time of 38.23, but the former coming 56th and the latter taking 57th position.

Bree Nordin was Ilford’s first woman to finish as she came home in 44.41 to come 152nd overall and 16th in her gender.

Nordin’s time was enough to earn gold in the F55 category. Jenni Sheehan (45.53) and Nicola Hopkinson (50.46) also took part for Ilford.

Declan Cullen and Doris Gaga set new personal bests with 46.59 and 52.59 respectively. Other Ilford members to take part included Terry Knightly (38.59), Steve Parker (44.34), Bradley Brown (44.52), Rob Sargent (48.31), Bill Green (50.14) and Julia Galea (56.06). In the Essex team standings the men were ninth and the women finished fifth.

A small Ilford squad took part in the second Orion Forest five-mile off-road race at Epping Forest on Saturday. Brown led Ilford by finishing 42nd out of the 113 finishers in 38.52.

Rachel Halpin (43.09) came home in 70th, as Victoria Morgan (44.13) was 75th and Pathrose Louis (44.59) 83rd. Bill Green (46.39) concluded Ilford’s interest and managed to squeeze inside the top 100.

Veteran Graham Williams travelled to Bewl Water on Sunday to compete in the Bewl Water 15 and, despite a heavy downpour, managed to pick up a silver medal in the over-75 class. A fine effort.

Ilford took part in the fourth leg of the East London Five Inter-club Series last week, held on a very hot evening in the Eastbrook End Country Park. The men managed to finish second and the women were also runners-up.
