Valentines Park outfit suffered 141-run loss at home to Hornchurch on Saturday

Theeban Tavarasa admits Ilford were beaten by the better team after going down by 141 runs at home to Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier Division leaders Hornchurch on Saturday.

The Valentines Park club fielded first after losing the toss and saw their visitors declare on 323-5 after centuries from Ronnie Saunders (102) and Billy Gordon (100 not out).

Ilford’s reply never really got going, with Haaris Ayub’s 49 after coming in at number nine the top score as the hosts were all out for 182 in reply.

It was always likely to be tough against the league leaders for the Valentines Park side, which Tavarasa acknowledges.

But he knows Ilford did not play well enough in all areas of the game as they suffered a heavy loss.

“Hornchurch played like the leaders that they are, while we played exactly like a team in seventh place, so we were beaten by the better side,” he said.

“We didn’t bowl well as a unit for the first time this season, while Hornchurch batted well and it was always going to be tough from there.

“We know we can do a lot better and we still have a good cushion over the bottom two, but we need to secure safety as soon as possible.”
