Wanstead bowls club meet Steve Forrest's team from Redcar

Beware the Redcar bowls Haka!

It was a happy reunion at Wanstead Bowls Club (above) at the weekend as former player Steve Forrest returned with his new team.

A squad of 19 from where Forrest now lives in Redcar made their way south to play Wanstead on Friday before playing Silverthorn and Aldersbrook over the weekend.

Club spokeswoman Jean Batten said: “We had a very enjoyable afternoon and evening at the club.

“The bowls matches were very friendly and it was a pleasure to be on the rinks.”

Wanstead claimed a narrow victory and were treated to Redcar’s version of the Haka!

“It was very good and a shame we couldn’t reply,” added Batten. “We will have to think of something for next time.”

Meanwhile, the women’s recent clash at Silverthorn proved to be a close one.

The team of Paula Nottage, Sue Meredith, Batten and Janet Lee led 18-13 going into the last end. But Silverthorn held five as Lee stepped up for her final wood.

And she managed to knock on another wood to take the shot and the match by 19-13.

Wanstead Bowling Club welcomes new, beginner player. Fridays at 4pm in Overton Drive (next to the Golf club).
