Ilford schoolboy Ilyas Hussain had special reason to enjoy the Easter holidays after winning a bronze medal at a taekwondo competition in Germany.

The Beal High School pupil was competing at the four-day Presidents Cup G2 World Ranking Taekwondo Championships in Bonn, where more than 1,500 players were in action.

Hussain, 14, is a member of the GB Junior squad and was competing for the first time in the under-45kg division alongside brother Ibrahim, who was on the opposite side of the draw.

Both brothers secured convincing wins, with Ibrahim making it to the quarter-finals and Ilyas progressing further to reach the semi-finals, where he faced the current Dutch Open champion.

Hussain fought hard over the course of the three rounds and held a lead until the closing seconds of the match when he conceded a head shot and lost 4-2.

Nonetheless, it was an amazing achievement for the youngster, who can take lots of positives as well as his bronze medal, from the tournament.

Hussain trains twice a week at local club Gurumu Taekwondo, as well as in Manchester with the National Academy at weekends and school holidays.

And the teenager is now fighting for a qualification place for the World Championships in Canada later this year.
