We’re confident claims Jarvis

Matt Jarvis insists West Ham are determined to get “back on track” when they visit Southampton on Sunday following the “blip” of their home defeat to Stoke last time out.

The Hammers suffered their first defeat of the season when going down 1-0 to the Potters before the international break, but won a friendly against Espanyol in Barcelona by the same scoreline last week.

And winger Jarvis believes they have the confidence to return from St Mary’s with a positive result from the televised game.

He said: “We were very disappointed in losing to Stoke in our last game – a result I think was a blip for us, but something we want to get out of the system.

“Southampton are a good team and pass the ball well, but we are in confident mood.

“We enjoyed a good point [in a 1-1 draw] at St Mary’s last season, so we will go there to get a result that will see us back on track.”

Jarvis had been hoping to supply the ammunition for returning striker Andy Carroll, who was expected to make a comeback from injury prior to his latest setback this week.

He understands Carroll’s frustration, but hopes that new recruit Mladen Petric can quickly step into the breach.

Jarvis said: “It is frustrating for Andy when you are working so hard to get over an injury and sometimes there are other things you pick up while doing this.

“Andy is a strong character and will continue to work as hard as he can to be back as soon as possible.

“But Mladen is a good addition and that is what it is about – having a squad so that others can step up and play their part.”

Jarvis was part of the contingent that played against Espanyol last week and he believes the trip to Spain was certainly a worthy exercise.

He said: “It was a good game and we played a different style of team.

“So it was definitely worthwhile and keeps everyone ticking over. It was good to play in front of a good crowd and always good to see a strong group of our own fans there cheering us on.”
