Golf: Ilford GC member Derek Diamond has no plans to slow down after celebrating 90th birthday

Derek Diamond played his fellow veterans at Ilford GC on his 90th birthday and showed them a thing or two striking the ball accurately.
He turned in the best score of the day to win a cash prize, plus a giant 90th birthday cake paid for by the over-60s.
But then Diamond always has been a fairly mean golfer. He joined Ilford 34 years ago, has hit 72 on the par 68 course and has one of the best records for scoring a hole-in-one.
On the club’s six par threes, he has aced five of them. The last was three years ago when he was a mere 87; on the 13th, he put the ball in the hole from the tee 200 yards away. And only last winter, on the 9th, the longest par 4, he scored a birdie: his third shot, 100 yards from the pin, went straight in.
“Derek is an inspiration to us all,” said Ilford seniors secretary Declan Kinsella. “He has a great zest for life, plays three times a week, and has amazing balance for a man of his age.”
