Ilford AC's Tom Gardner narrowly missed out on Gold in the Valentines Park 5k
ILFORD AC’S Tom Gardner secured second place at the Valentines Park 5k on Sunday.
In a 147-strong field Gardner battled it out for top spot with Billericay’s Crispian Bloomfield until the latter made his move with 400 metres to go, opening up a 10-second margin by the time he crossed the line.
Bloomfield clocked 15 minutes and 35 seconds to beat his own course record of 15.47, with Gardner was also under the old mark, registering 15.45.
Gardner was well supported by Malcolm Muir (4th) in 16.05, Iain Macdonald (5th) in 16.59, Neil Crisp (17th) in 18.19 and Frank McGowan (19th) in 18.30 who closed the six-man scoring team for the Elvis series.
The in-form Terry Knightley produced a fine run to clock 17.29, which saw him shave three seconds from the Vet-50 club record for five kilometres. His time earned eighth place.
In the women’s race Karen Sindall had a stomach problem on the first lap and had to slow, yet still recovered sufficiently to finish as the second lady home in 19.34, behind Benfleet’s Charlotte Peppiat (18.35).
Bree Nordin recorded a time of 21.2 to finish as the fifth woman home and Jenni and Dianne Crisp completed the four scorers with 22.20 and 22.28 respectively.
Both the men and women’s teams from Ilford easily retained their titles for the third successive year in the Six race Elvis series.
Individual series prizes went to Tom Gardner (1st man overall) Bree Nordin (2nd woman overall), Nicola Hopkinson (1st woman over 45) and Pam Jones (1st woman over 55).
Also running for Ilford were James Roberts (17.57, 13th), Kevin Newell (18.14, 16th), Peter Clinch (18.28, 18th), Gary Floate (18.45, 22nd), Matt Maple (19.46, 33rd), John Mackenzie (20.45, 43rd), John Pells (20.45, 44th), John Platt (21.56, 54th), Colin Davis (22.13, 57th), Paul Emery (22.55, (66th), Nicola Hopkinson 22.58 (68th), Declan Cullen 23.02 (69th), Peter Spelman 23.51 (80th), Sally Gillam 23.21 (84th), Eileen Sheridan 24.44, 87th), Billy Green (24.48, 89th), Satha Alaga (25.04, 93rd), Pathrose Louis (25.43, 98th), Suki Jandu (26.0, 100th), Pam Jones (26.31, 102nd), Robin Davis (27.12, 107th), Carol Muir (27.40, 110th), Meredity Floate (28.46, 119th), Dave Sharpe (32.27, 133rd) and Catherine Green (35.11, 142nd).
The previous Friday, Ilford’s Malcolm Muir won the Serpentine 5k in Hyde Park, clocking a respectable 16.19. In dismal and windy conditions he finished 23 seconds clear of his nearest challenger, fellow Vet-35 Basil Wallace of Herne Hill.
It was also a successful return to racing for veteran John Batchelor. In the 69-year-old’s first race since early March and minor heart surgery in late June, he placed 65th in a field of 208 in 20.01.
