Barkingside manager Matt Frew admitted he “threw the kitchen sink” at his players at half-time before his 10-man team staged a gutsy fightback to claim a 2-2 draw at Wroxham on Tuesday evening.

With the visitors two goals down following Ross Durrant’s double in the opening five minutes and a man down after Paul Kavanagh was sent off, Frew revealed that he “went to town” on his players during the break.

Frew said: “It wasn’t the most pleasant half-time team-talk I’ve ever done.I threw the kitchen sink at the players and really went to town on them.

I told them that the first half wasn’t good enough. We had a terrible start.

“We’d set up a game-plan but the players then did the very opposite.

“Some of them don’t seem that bothered about playing for the club, but I told them they had something to prove to everybody in the second half.”

Barkingside duly responded and claimed a share of the spoils thanks to two goals in three minutes by Toran Senghore shortly into the second period.

The big striker now has five goals to his name and Frew is pleased with his progress.

He said: “Toran has come on in leaps and bounds and took his two goals brilliantly.

“We kept two up front and played three in midfield. We had to roll our sleeves up and it was a gamble, but we were the better side in the second half and could even have won the game in the end.”

As for Kavanagh’s red card, Frew said: “I didn’t really see what happened.

“There was some pushing and shoving going on and Kav was shouting to the linesman, ‘You can see that he stamped on me.’

“It was claimed that my player was responsible for a head-butt but he’s not that kind of person. The other player was only booked but at least he came up to Kav after the game and apologised to him.”

Barkingside are set to welcome Burnham Ramblers and Heybridge Swifts to Oakside on Saturday and Monday respectively.

And Frew believes they can end their run of seven games without a win.

He said: “I’d take four points from the two games. We’ve still not really clicked this season, but the second half against Wroxham was more like the Barkingside I really know.”
