It doesn’t get much better than this. West Ham outplayed once mighty Manchester United with a stunning display of attacking football that we have never seen at the London Stadium.

That is quite a claim but just think about the way the Hammers played right from the start of this match.

United are no pushovers, even in their current turmoil, but West Ham played like a really strong team. Everyone of them knew their role in the team and carried out to the letter.

This was no smash and grab raid, this was West Ham outplaying Jose Mourinho’s boys and it delighted manager Manuel Pellegrini.

“Just because you are playing against Chelsea or Manchester United you don’t have to play with everyone at the back to get a result,” he said.

“We played as I like my team to play, as a big team trying to get to the other box. We scored three goals and we missed a lot of opportunities in the second half because we tried to play a little bit too fast.”

Mourinho was quick to point out that the first goal was offside, the second was a big deflection and the third was a foul in the build up, but quite frankly United were awful, so who cares?

Romelu Lukaku failed to score against the Hammers for a nice change, though he did hit the post, but the way West Ham played, anything other than a comfortable home win would have been a travesty.

There was one point when West Ham were playing the ball around with the crowd singing ole with every pass.

We don’t see this against Man United, this is a very different Hammers team and it has happened in such a short time.

“I remember the questions of the media when we had fixtures against Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United and people thinking we wouldn’t get any points,” said Pellegrini.

“But football is different. We continued working because I saw every day in the week that the players believe in what we are doing.”

Everyone performed well, but most notably Pablo Zabaleta was immense, the centre back pairing of Fabien Balbuena and Issa Diop hardly put a foot wrong.

Declan Rice against Paul Pogba was awesome again, Marko Arnautovic was a tower of strength all game, but perhaps best of all was Mark Noble.

The skipper ran the game and with just a couple of minutes to go he was still tearing around like a teenager.

He was everywhere and his pinpoint pass for the Arnautovic goal summed up his and West Ham’s afternoon – breathtaking!
