Dagenham & Redbridge John Still believes a slow first-half cost his side as they crashed out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat to rivals Leyton Orient.

Macauley Bonne’s 23rd minute goal was the difference between Leyton Orient and Dagenham & Redbridge in what was a thrilling fourth qualifying round FA Cup replay at Brisbane Road.

Still’s Daggers chucked everything at Orient, but Steve Davis’ side stood firm and booked themselves a spot at Gillingham on the weekend of November 4.

“First-half I didn’t think we played as well as we can, second-half I thought we were outstanding, how we didn’t score I don’t know,” he said.

“I think there was one that was going in and it hit one of our players on the line.

“We were terrific in the second-half, but we didn’t play well enough in the first-half.”

The Daggers started the match with a 5-3-2 formation but at half-time Still decided to bring on Fejiri Okenabirhie for Charlee Adams and revert back to a 4-4-2.

“Our game was too slow in the first-half, it was no-one’s particular fault, but the game was I thought was a bit slow.

“We went with a new system Saturday and we played it again, but I don’t think it quite worked well as well, but once we changed it I thought we had the ascendancy for most of the game.

“They defended for their lives fair play to them, but I think we created enough opportunities to score a goal, regardless of the one that hit us on the line.

“We played really, but we just didn’t do enough in the first-half.”

The manager admits he has never doubted his side’s character and praised the performance and fight despite falling short.

“That’s never been a doubt, I thought we played well second-half, we lost a cup game but we played well.

“Hartlepool we played well and lost, in fact I thought we played better than well and the last couple of games I’ve thought we’ve played ok.

“We’re finding goals hard to come by.”

Dagenham will now turn their focus to a home match against Wrexham on Saturday at Victoria Road.
