Barkingside are preparing for their third season in the Ryman North

Cricklefield manager gives update on how the squad is shaping up

Barkingside manager Gursel Gulfer has revealed Saturday’s pre-season opener against Brimsdown Rovers will feature just trialists.

The Side boss has been busy this summer preparing for the new Ryman North campaign and getting his squad ready to compete.

He has had various players come to training sessions and had to whittle the amount attending down from 45 recently, but will see trialists in action for the first time on Saturday at the Met Police Grounds pitch in Chigwell.

Barkingside travel to Essex Senior League outfit Sporting Bengal United on Tuesday (July 14) and Gulfer revealed his plan for the matches.

He said: “I have had 40 to 45 players at the training sessions and it has been hard.

“We let around 15 go recently and I am playing all trialists on Saturday, no first-team players will be involved because we are still whittling down all the trialists.

“I am signing players as we go along for the first team and against Sporting Bengal on Tuesday you can expect to see a few first-teamers involved alongside trialists.”

Gulfer is excited about the prospect of some of the trialists he has and believes it is only fair to give them a proper opportunity and not judge them from one game.

“We are starting from scratch essentially,” he added. “We are looking at the players for two to three weeks rather than playing them in one game and getting rid of them so we are giving everyone a chance and trust me we have some good ones in there so I am confident.”
