Mixed fortunes for local rivals as Essex Senior League season starts
Redbridge snatched a 2-1 victory from the jaws of defeat against Tower Hamlets on the first day of the new Essex Senior League season at Oakside.
Hasan Mustafa’s 33rd-minute goal from Wale Odedoyin’s cross gave the visitors the advantage, which looked like being enough as the match entered its closing stages.
But Motormen scored twice in the space of two minutes, with Calvin Poku getting them back on level terms after twice hitting the crossbar before Eljay Worrall’s 90th-minute header secured all three points.
Redbridge are back on home turf on Tuesday when they host Sawbridgeworth, while Tower Hamlets must travel once again and visit Hackney Wick.
Redbridge: Greene, Naidoo, Thomas, Mbamarah, Worrell, Duggan, Toussaint, Nelson, Mtyanda, Moses, Poku. Subs: Reynolds-Blanche, Gates, Dingli, Carter, Gent.
Tower Hamlets: Bennett, Sumithran, Watson, Gordon, Anthony, Clarke, Ackie (Barnett 53), Ndure, Odedoyin, Monteiro (Bunyat 71), Mustafa (Earle 53). Unused subs: Ikenwe, Tobun.
*Allan Fenn’s Ilford began their campaign with a comfortable 5-0 victory at newcomers Woodford Town, who finished the game with only nine men.
After winning an appeal against expulsion from the league earlier in the month, the Foxes quickly found their shooting boots to bank the points as Woodford had two players sent off in the second half.
Clapton were beaten 2-0 at Basildon United, where Tommy Barton and Marcus Bowers were the met on target for the home side, while Sporting Bengal fell to a 2-0 defeat at Takeley, for whom Mitchell Das and Stuart Zanone (penalty) found the net.
Sporting Bengal visit West Essex on Tuesday, while Clapton travel to Ilford’s Cricklefield Stadium the following evening.
Barkingside begin their campaign at Great Wakering Rovers on Tuesday.
