Redbridge crashed out of the FA Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat in their preliminary round tie against Bostik North outfit Grays Athletic.

The Motormen defended well, but couldn’t keep the hosts out as Suleyman Zudhu and Joao Carlos guided Athletic to a dominant 2-0 victory at Parkside to progress into the next round of the prestigious cup competition.

It was the visitors captain Eljay Worrell with the first chance of the match as he drove his free-kick shot into the arms of Lamar Johnson inside the first minute.

The hosts got the early pressure with some great attacking runs from James Folkes and Joao Carlos, which resulted in numerous and free-kick opportunities, but nothing dangerous.

Redbridge held off the pressure and managed to win the ball back in the ninth minute, when Bradley Gates made a run down the left side, before picking up striker Brian Moses whose header went just wide of the post.

Seven minutes later Grays Suleyman Zudhu looked set to surge through on goal, but was stopped in his tracks by last-ditch tackle from Luke Thomas to keep the score level.

The hosts Carlos went close as he struck from inside the box, but was easily denied by Lewis Greene.

In the thirty first minutes the visitor’s skipper Worrell headed straight into the arms of keeper Johnson from close range.

It wasn’t long before the hosts finally took the lead as Zudhu stretched out and poked home the ball to give his side a 1-0 lead in the thirty eighth minute.

Grays extended their lead to 2-0 six minutes into the second-half when Carlos slotted home a cross from Adeyinka Cole.

Substitute Kiernan Hughes-Mason made a great run into box and fired his shot wide of the right post.

The striker went close again in the sixty eighth minute when he latched onto the ball and took a shot from outside the box.

Redbridge mounted the pressure on in the dying stages but Johnson held onto everything they threw his way.
