Ryman North: Barkingside 0 Redbridge 1

Any faint hopes of Barkingside surviving relegation from Ryman North were wiped away as they lost to already-relegated Redbridge at Cricklefield Stadium.

It was a game where Barkingside dominated but fell to a one-goal defeat as, despite the constant threat on the visiting goal, they couldn’t seem to get the ball in the net, while Jay Knight did for the Motormen.

The game started in scrappy fashion but, with Barkingside seeing much more of the ball and attacking well, the home side were looking too strong for their local rivals.

The first chance came inside the opening 10 minutes, when the ball was almost scrambled over the line in the six-yard box by Jonathan Adebayo.

After several Barkingside chances and the majority of them fabulously saved by Motormen keeper Niklas Freund, it was clear that the Redbridge custodian was going to prove hard to beat.

Midway through the half, a long ball put Michael Spencer through on goal with just the keeper to beat and he rounded Freund before scrambling the ball to Luke With. But the big striker, after firing at what appeared to be a gaping goal, was denied by the outstretched leg of Freund.

It was a similar story as George Lataaya went clean through on goal seconds before half time, but somehow Freund was able to get a touch to the ball and force it behind for a corner.

As the second half started, most in attendance expected nothing but Barkingside goals after they had failed to take their chances in the first 45 minutes.

But, seven minutes after the restart and against the run of play, Knight scored for Redbridge from inside the box after receiving the ball from a wide position and turning a defender before placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Once again, Barkingside pressured their opponents looking to force a goal, but with no clear chances being created there was nothing to show for it.

After a lengthy stoppage for a clash of heads there was one last chance for Barkingside to try and extend their fight for survival when Alfie Wren turned inside the box, but his weak shot towards goal was easy enough for Freund to collect.

Defeat left Barkingside 11 points adrift of safety with only three matches remaining, while bottom club Redbridge are now just one point behind Gursel Gulfer’s men in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

Barkingside welcome Romford, who have won their last four matches, to Cricklefield Stadium on Monday, while Redbridge host play-off chasing Cheshunt at Oakside on Tuesday.
