Leyton Orient skipper Nathan Clarke insists current boss Russell Slade is the only man for the job.
Slade was told after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Colchester that Tuesday’s trip to Notts County would be his last if his side failed to secure victory.
But despite the O’s only picking up a 1-1 draw, Italian owner Francesco Becchetti opted to stick with Slade in the short term at least following a meeting with the boss at Meadow Lane.
And Clarke feels he can talk for the rest of the squad in saying that the current O’s boss is the only one who can help the club progress as they head into Saturday’s League One game at Scunthorpe United.
“It’s strange circumstances, but as players we can only go out and do as much as we can for the manager,” said captain Clarke.
“He has always stuck behind us and us players believe he is the man to take us forward. We want him here as long as possible.
“We have not been at our best with the performances ,but we are fighting for every ball and we are trying to turn it around as quickly as we can.
“You saw the support at Notts County, they were right behind us players and the manager
“The manager is a massive person in this club. He supports everyone out on that pitch, he loves the support he gets from the fans.
“You can see they are all behind him. We hope that he gets the time he deserves to turn it round.
“We believe he’s the man to do that and bring out the best in the players. There’s nobody that knows us better than him, so we are hoping he sticks with us.”
Greater pressure is on the O’s after last season’s promotion near-miss, but Clarke insists they have to learn to cope with that. “We’ve got to deal with expectations I guess,” he added.
“The new players have brought high expectations for us to do well every game and we have got to deliver. There’s no excuses now.”
