Ilford’s hopes of a top four finish in the Essex Senior League suffered a blow with a 1-0 defeat at home to Hullbridge Sports.

The Foxes started the brighter of the two sides, having Sports keeper James Merrells worried with a cross-cum-shot and a free kick in the opening exchanges, but both efforts were off target.

It took until the 25th minute for home keeper Chris Clark to be tested, but he was well behind a shot from a Hullbridge player that was straight at him.

Again, though, Ilford pressed forward and nearly capitalised on a blunder in the away defence before Merrells did well to sweep up and cut the chance out.

The game was perhaps best described as scrappy, but Foxes keeper Clark did well to deny Hullbridge attacker Brad Morgan with a close range header before saving an attempt at a lob from the touchline.

Ilford had a late corner cleared off the line, but neither side could find a way through as they went in level at half time although Sports’ Charlie Little saw an effort cleared off the line shortly after the restart.

It seemed to spark the match into life, with the Foxes next to go close as they saw one of their players hit the post as his shot went wide.

The game continued to lack quality, though, but Hullbridge man Luke Hornsley was starting to cause the hosts one or two problems.

With time almost up and the game seemingly heading for a draw, there was late heartbreak for Ilford as Joe Turpin scored via a deflection to give the visitors the win.
