Ilford manager Allan Fenn is preparing his team as usual ahead of their FA Cup preliminary round tie against Haverhill Borough this weekend.

The Foxes host the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Premier Division outfit on Saturday and are looking to extend their good start to the season.

“We’re taking it one game at a time” said Fenn.

“If we were playing against Haverhill, Billericay or anyone in the cup we would prepare the same way.”

The manager has had their opposition scouted ahead of the encounter and he expects a tough test, adding: “I have had them watched twice.

“They’ve not had the best of starts, but they’ve played two of the best teams in their league in their opening games, so you can’t really go by that.

“They come up from the first division last year and are finding their feet.”

Ilford have made a handful of signings in the opening two weeks of the season and Fenn believes they will all help them in their bid to progress into the next round.

“The new faces have lifted us, they’re good players with real quality and experience,” he admitted.

“We have now got a fantastic mix of new players and old heads in the squad.”

The boss is also realistic about their cup ambitions and wants them to focus on becoming a better unit more than setting targets, adding: “We’re not going to win it but we need every game this month to get fit and become more organised as a team.

“If that takes us through to the next round of the cup then brilliant, but from a manager’s point of view I just want to keep building.

“Obviously we would love to go as far as we can as it’s every boy and man’s dream to be in or to win the FA Cup.”

Ilford have won three of their first five Essex Senior League matches this term, going down 3-2 at Burnham in midweek after a 3-0 win at Enfield on Saturday.

And Fenn heaped praise on his new assistant manager for his impact in the side’s start to the campaign, adding: “Billy Cove has been phenomenal since he has joined.

“He is brilliant and out of all the new signings so far he has been the one. Everyone respects him and he has helped bring this group close together.”
