Ilford made an excellent start to the new Essex Senior League season with a five-star display against new boys Barkingside.

The Foxes enjoyed a strong 2015/16 season, while their Cricklefield Stadium tenants were battling against the drop from Ryman North.

And the ‘home’ side earned clear bragging rights in the first league meeting between the two clubs since 2004 as they ran out convincing derby winners.

Gus Gulfer’s Barkingside broke the deadlock on 17 minutes through Danny Laird.

But Foxes were back on terms thanks to a stunning goal from new recruit Sipho Mtyanda and took the lead through their legendary long-servinng striker Chris Stevens, who notched his 208th goal for the club.

Luke With was given his marching orders for Barkingside just before the hour mark and Allan Fenn’s Ilford moved 3-1 up on 65 minutes thanks to a free-kick from substitute Elias Armar Tackie, who had replaced Robbie Farrel during the interval.

And the home side sealed the points in stunning style with an excellent late fourth goal from Justas Paulius, before Armar Tackie added even more gloss with his second goal of the afternoon to complete their nap hand five minutes from time.

Ilford are set to host Ryman North side Romford in a friendly on Wednesday, before they turn their attentions to the FA Cup next weekend, with an extra preliminary round tie against Burnham Ramblers at Cricklefield on Saturday.

Barkingside are due to host Brentwood in a friendly on Monday night and were also given a home tie and welcome Hadleigh United on Sunday, before Gulfer’s men entertain Tower Hamlets in the league on Wednesday August 10.
