Late goal ends cup hopes

FC Leytonstone were knocked out of the London City Airport League Premier Division Cup by a late Poplar goal on Sunday.

Keeper Kevin Rabey was largely untroubled early on, but Poplar opened the scoring with a hotly-disputed goal on 20 minutes, as FC Leytonstone looked for an offside flag.

The visitors responded well, though, as an incisive move set up an equaliser for captain Ahmed Arab, who fired home from close range.

Conditions deteriorated, but Leytonstone had a great chance to take the lead before half time, only for Sergio Garcia to miss it.

Poplar were pushed back in the second half, with Leytonstone having four more good chances to edge in front, but the scoreline remained level until the closing minutes when the visitors failed to clear, as Mikael Martin was caught flat-footed, and a Poplar striker sealed a 2-1 win.

Manager Munaf Abhram said: “The fact we had our talismen Zulqi Khan and Bradley Williams missing with injury, but still had a strong squad out for this cup game, makes the defeat even more disappointing.”
