Barkingside edge out Aveley in 10-goal thriller while Ilford suffer defeat at Felixstowe & Walton

Redbridge scooped the Len Cordell Trophy with a 5-1 pre-season win over tenants Newbury Forest on Saturday at Oakside.

After an even start with chances coming and going for both sides, the Motormen took the lead on the half-hour mark when winger Jason Reynolds-Blanche produced a cool finish for Ricky Eaton and Joey May’s side.

Forest spurned opportunities to level the encounter, but two goals in a matter of minutes saw Redbridge take complete control of the game with new signings Sipho Mytanda and Calvin Poku finding the back of the net before the end of the first half.

Newbury Forest pulled one back from a free-kick to give them hope in the second period, but Motormen restored their three-goal cushion through the hard working Brian Moses, and then Patrick Damali sealed the success late on.

Redbridge end their pre-season campaign with a home encounter with Essex Olympian League side Canning Town tonight before hosting Tower Hamlets in the opening weekend of the Essex Senior League.

Ilford, fresh from their reprieve earlier in the week, slipped to a 5-1 defeat at Felixstowe & Walton on Saturday.

Allan Fenn’s side had taken the lead with a bullet-like header that gave home goalkeeper Ryan Garnham no chance.

However, that was as good as it got for the Cricklefield-based side as they went on to lose heavily and will host Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday before their league opener with Woodford Town on Saturday.

Barkingside emerged victorious in a 10-goal thriller with Isthmian North side Aveley, running out 6-4 winners at Redbridge Sports Centre.

Side will look to end their pre-season campaign on a high with a tough test against another Isthmian North side in the shape of Barking, winners of the Essex Senior League last season.

Following that, Michael Walther’s outfit have a blank weekend, before opening their league campaign on Tuesday, August 1 with a trip to Great Wakering Rovers.
