Essex Senior League: Redbridge, Barkingside and Ilford all held to draws

Our three local clubs played out 1-1 draws in their respect league fixtures at the weekend

It finished all square between Essex Senior League promotion hopefuls Redbridge and Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.

The top-two in the division went head-to-head at Burroughs Park and unsurprisingly a close contest occurred.

Wakering started strongly, but it was the Motormen who took the lead when Brian Moses brought the ball forward and curled into the corner.

It was a superb goal, but the hosts soon got back on level terms when the in-form Nathan Dewberry headed in at the back post following a corner.

After a thrilling start, the pace of the game slightly slowed before Redbridge were awarded a penalty just past the half an hour mark.

Moses stepped up and blazed his effort over the crossbar as it ended level at half time between the title hopefuls.

Both sides had further opportunities after the break, but none were taken and it finished 1-1 at Burroughs Park.

Ricky Eaton and Joey May’s team stay in first place and hold a three-point advantage over Wakering with 28 fixtures completed.

Elsewhere, Barkingside played out a 1-1 draw with Southend Manor at Cricklefield Stadium in front of 48 spectators.

Manor took the lead in east London, but Roddy Lemba’s 44th-minute goal levelled the scores and that’s how it finished, leaving Side in 14th position.

Ilford were also held to a 1-1 draw away to Sawbridgeworth Town in a game where they finished with 10-men.

Billy Cove and Allan Fenn’s team remain in seventh place having played 30 fixtures so far.

The Foxes are back in action on Wednesday when they host Great Wakering Rovers while Barkingside visit Waltham Forest on the same evening.

On Tuesday, Redbridge travel to West Essex looking to maintain their place at the top of the standings.
