James Peagram returned to haunt former club Ilford with the only goal at Cricklefield Stadium on Wednesday.

Striker Peagram moved to Basildon last month, having netted 23 times for the Foxes in 32 appearances in the first half of the Essex Senior League campaign.

And he claimed the winner just three minutes into the second half when a long throw from Marcus Bowers found him at the far post to head home.

The visitors had the better of the first period, without creating too many clear-cut chances, but were denied by keeper Chris Clark and saw Bowers hit the post.

Tony Cookey fired a rare chance wide of the post for the home side, but after Peagram’s goal, the Bees might have scored more, as Ilford struggled to threaten an equaliser, with Cookey denied by Connor Wheatley.

Allan Fenn and Billy Cove’s men remain in seventh place ahead of Saturday’s home match against Tower Hamlets, who are two points behind them in eighth.
