Landlords Ilford eased into the next round of the county cup as a goal from Jamie Hart saw off tenants Barkingside at Cricklefield Stadium.

Allan Fenn’s men looked comfortable throughout, controlling the tempo and showing atttacking flair, as they recorded a third successive victory of the month to book a place in the third round.

The Foxes started brightly in their blue and white kit as they mounted early pressure, earning a corner, but Barkingside keeper Will Hunt was first troubled from Liam Burgess’ low, long-range effort in the 24th minute.

Ilford defender Sam Baffour continued to run and cause problems down the flank as the hosts dictated much of the play before Hart’s close-range effort from inside the box ended up in the back on the net on 37 minutes.

The home side were unable to extend the advantage after Paul Oshin chased down a loose pass back to Jezreel David, but managed to keep former player Eden Nelson quiet at the other end.

After a good first-half performance Fenn’s instructions for the second period might have been to be more clinical.

Ilford continued to dominate for large swathes of the second half, with a man of the match performance from Burgess, who was playing intelligent balls forward and troubling the opposition.

Barkingside manager Michael Walther brought on Jason Fontaine and Michael Ogboin before the hour mark and he looked to be a shrewd move as the latter almost buried a chance with his first touch of the ball.

The visitors continued to pour forward and grow in confidence, with Ilford giving away sloppy fouls until finally, referee Craig Barnett booked Alex Akanbi.

Fenn sent fresh legs on midway through the half and the Foxes managed to regain some control with Khadean Campbell and Sherwin Stanley having chances to double their lead late on.

But in the end a lone goal was enough to send Ilford through and they will return to Essex Senior League action against in-form Great Wakering on Saturday, after Barkingside have met Redbridge in a Friday night derby.
