Essex Senior League: Basildon United 1 Barkingside 3
Barkingside look set to be gracing the Ryman One North next season after this 3-1 victory over Basildon United at Gardiners Close.
It was a strong start from Matt Frew’s visitors who were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes, and though they took their foot off the pedal, Joe Ellul’s second half header secured the runner-up spot in the Essex Senior League and a likely place in the Ryman One North, which will be finalised next week.
Richard Oxby fired an early warning sign for the Bees but there was little the hosts could do with Barkingside’s opener after 12 minutes.
Gabriel Onireti’s crossfield ball found right back George Tubey with acres of space and he took one touch before volleying into the top left hand corner from 30 yards.
It got even worse for Bertie Brayley’s Basildon side three minutes later when goalkeeper Steve Brown could only block an Oxby shot following a corner and captain Dan Callaway tapped in from close range.
The visitors did begin to sit back on their two-goal cushion and Greg Akpele saw a shot come back off the post after 25 minutes, though the visitors stood no chance with Akpele’s goal two minutes before half time.
A free-kick in the Basildon half was chipped forward to the striker who chested the ball down before volleying past Chris Clark.
That gave the hosts a lift going into the second half but ’Side restored the two-goal cushion after 53 minutes when a fine Paul Kavanagh free-kick was headed past Brown by Joe Ellul.
From then on Basildon spent much of the game in the Barkingside half, but were limited to half chances by a strong visiting defence well marshalled by Sean Crossley.
Their best opportunities fell to player-manager Brayley, who fired wide from a tight angle in the box on the left with 20 minutes remaining and was also off target after an initial free-kick was blocked.
At the other end substitute Jake King was denied by Brown and as time ticked away a long range effort from Oxby was off target.
But as the full-time whistle was blown, ‘Side celebrated a win and the highest Essex Senior League finish in their history, as well as a likely place in the Ryman One North alongside landlords Redbridge next season.
Coupled with their second place, there is still a chance of the Oakside outfit ending the season with some silverware when they face Bowers & Pitsea in the League Cup final on Friday at Grays Athletic’s Rush Green stadium.
