Ryman North: Sudbury 1 Barkingside 0; Soham Town Rangers 4 Redbridge 1

A late penalty broke Barkingside hearts as the Ryman North’s bottom club narrowly lost out away to league leaders Sudbury.

With Side propping up the standings after a lengthy winless run in the competition, pre-match expectations had been of a comfortable success for Suds.

But the Cricklefield Stadium club confounded expectations to hold their opponents at half time with their cause helped by Dagenham & Redbridge loanee Jimmy Shepherd, who was making his debut in the game.

Barkingside continued to do well after half time, although Shepherd was booked in the 64th minute that left him walking a tightrope for the rest of the match.

The visitors’ resolve was finally broken in the 78th minute when Sudbury took the lead from the spot through Craig Parker.

It was a lead Barkingside were unable to claw back in the remaining 12 minutes as they now find themselves six points adrift of safety at the foot of the standings.

But there are no doubt countless positives manager Gursel Gulfer can take into the rest of the survival battle as his team look to avoid a return to the Essex Senior League.

Redbridge’s hopes of surviving in the Ryman North suffered a dent as they went down 4-1 away to Soham Town Rangers, who may well have retained their spot in the league with victory on Saturday.

After a good few weeks at Oakside Stadium, hopes had been high for joint-managers Ricky Eaton and Dave Ross, but Ross Patterson looked to put pay to those ideas to put Rangers ahead in the 19th minute.

That was how the scores stayed heading into the second half, but the visitors hauled themselves level in the 61st minute through Reside Coxi Sebastfao.

But the Motormen were only level for six minutes before Town retook the lead through a penalty from Salim Relizani.

Goal in the final 10 minutes from Will Lawton and Ryan Sharman completed the victory for Soham, with Redbridge desperate to return to winning ways as soon as possible.

Redbridge: Chafer, Cornelius (Kabashi 81), Matthews, Dorgu, Parish, Belindir, Gent (Sackey 81), Ditkevicius (Ogunleye 84), Coxi Sebastfao, Portway, Santo

Unused subs: Eaton
