Much of the Essex club’s squad currently on deals that only run until end of season

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Peter Taylor hopes the change in the club’s ownership allows him to reward some of his key players with longer contracts.

American consortium Victoria Road Football, LLC last week completed its purchase of a majority shareholding in Daggers, bringing an end to a period of financial difficulty for the Essex club.

Owing to their recent financial struggles, the majority of the squad at Victoria Road are on deals that only run until the end of the current term.

But with the new investors having safeguarded Daggers’ future financially, Taylor is hoping to tie some of his top-performing players down to longer contracts.

“A lot of the players have signed here on low wages because they wanted the opportunity to play, so I’d love to reward them now with a new contract and a longer contract,” he said.

“It’s up to them though; players get themselves contracts by playing well and that’s what I want them to do.”

Taylor also clarified that despite the new investment in the club, he will not be making wholesale changes to his playing squad, reiterating his belief that the team he has assembled can be successful.

The 65-year-old added: “I’ve got a lot of faith in this squad; I know we’ve had a bad start, but I think we’re better than what we’ve shown so far.

“I don’t think we need tons and tons of changes and new players, restarting and getting organised again. I just want these players to keep improving with the games they are playing.

“We did speak with (executive chairman) Peter (B. Freund) about needing a bit more experience, and that allowed us to get Liam Bellamy and Jack Munns in.

“It doesn’t mean there’s going to be more players coming in, but if the right players comes along and we’re in a position to afford him, like any manager I’m going to be considering it.”
