Dagenham & Redbridge captain Ben Nunn was pleased to be back on the pitch at the weekend, but eventually ended up frustrated as he returned to action in a 2-0 defeat to Gateshead.

Goals from Steve Rigg and Tom White, just three minutes apart, sealed the three points for the Heed at Gateshead International Stadium and made it five matches without a win for the Daggers.

The 28-year-old Nunn had missed the first 14 games of the National League campaign through injury – after being named skipper of Peter Taylor’s new-look Daggers side – and he admitted he was hoping for a better return.

“It was good to be out there, but it was frustrating, I wanted to win,” Nunn said.

“I wanted to come back and prove that I can do something for the team and for the club, but that wasn’t to be.

“I will get round the boys and try to get us all going for next week.

“We’ll look at our performance, we ourselves know it wasn’t good enough, the fans are saying they know it’s not good enough, but all we can do is go again Saturday and put it right.”

The right-back feels it was a frustrating afternoon made worse by the fact they had gotten off to a strong start with a solid opening 15 minutes.

“It was very frustrating for everyone involved,” he added.

“I thought it was the best we’ve started a game in a long time for the first 10 to 15 minutes, but then they got two goals and it killed us.

“No matter what game you’re in, if you’re 2-0 down at half-time you’re always up against it.

“I didn’t think it was through lack of effort or trying, some of the quality wasn’t there. If Chike scores when he goes through on goal it’s 1-1 and Sham had his chance, so that could have been 2-2.

“We had a couple other chances, but at the end of the day we can’t keep making excuses and looking for outlets, we’ve got to stick together as a group and pull through.”

Nunn says the players will spend this week assessing what went wrong with the two goals they conceded in the north east and correct it for this coming weekend’s home meeting with Wrexham.

“We’ll look at that, look at the video, see what we did wrong, and try to make it right for the next game,” he added.
