Dagenham & Redbridge slumped to a fourth successive defeat in the National Legaue after conceding two goals in the space of three first-half minutes at the Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Taylor made two changes to his starting line-up from the 3-1 home loss to Ebbsfleet as captain Ben Nunn came in for his first start of the season and Chike Kandi was also preferred in attack.

And the first effort of the game came on two minutes when Elliot Romain produced a darting run at the home defence and slid Kandi through, but Scott Barrow stuck a leg out to block.

A mistake by Luke Pennell then handed Scott Boden a chance at the other end, but he could not keep his shot down and it flew harmlessly over.

And Alex McQueen produced a good block to deny Robbie Tinkler on the right, with the resulting corner coming to nothing.

McQueen was involved at the other end on 13 minutes, playing the ball into the box to find Harry Donovan, who teed up Kandi, but the striker could not find the target.

However, Daggers fell behind five minutes later when Tinkler’s driven ball wasn’t dealt with and Steven Rigg followed up to beat Elliot Justham.

It was 2-0 just two minutes later as Tom White turned his man on the edge of the box and beat Justham with the aid of a deflection off Alex Davey.

And the hosts could have had a third on 26 minutes when Barrow whipped the ball in from the left and an unmarked Jack Hunter headed over

But Daggers then got a rare sight of goal when Donovan’s corner was not cleared and Shamir Mullings fired high and wide.

Justham saved well from Barrow, while Greg Olley fired straight at the Daggers keeper before the break.

And Nunn shot well over the crossbar after the restart after trying his luck from long-range on 48 minutes.

After a relatively quiet spell, Olley forced Justham into action again after breaking into the box and letting fly, but the keeper was equal to it.

And Daggers had a let-off on 57 minutes when a defensive mistake by Davey gave Boden a good chance, but he fired well over the target.

The visitors had the ball in the net on the hour, through Kandi, but the referee called play back after a foul by Fraser Kerr on Donovan.

And Daggers went close from a well-worked free-kick as Matt Robinson set up Donovan to cross for Mullings, whose effort was tipped over by Aynsley Pears.

Mullings made his mark at the other end on 62 minutes, clearing a header from former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson off the goalline at a corner to deny the Heed a third goal.

And a Boden header from Tinkler’s cross midway through the half was not good enough to test Justham, before Taylor sent Lamar Reynolds on for McQueen.

Nunn sent another effort from distance over the home crossbar with 18 minutes left, before Liam Bellamy and debutant Jack Munns came on for Kandi and Donovan.

And Munns worked some space for himself in the box, only for his shot to be well blocked by Williamson on 83 minutes.

But Gateshead went closest to scoring again when Barrow crossed for Boden, who should have found the net but couldn’t make sufficient connection and Daggers were reprieved again.

Daggers: Justham, Nunn, Pennell, Davey, McQueen (Reynolds 68), Robinson, Donovan (Munns 76), Wright, Kandi (Bellamy 76), Mullings, Romain.

Unused subs: Hoyte, Moore.

Attendance: 687 (including 54 Daggers fans).
