Striker scored decisive spot-kick for Peter Taylor’s men against the Iron to secure vital success

Dagenham & Redbridge attacker Chike Kandi says he relished the pressure of taking the late, decisive penalty in a 1-0 win at home to Braintree Town in the Vanarama National League.

In a tight affair with the Iron, Daggers were awarded a penalty in the final 10 minutes when Noel Leighton was fouled in the box.

Kandi was the man who took on the responsibility from 12 yards and calmly converted the spot-kick.

The strike proved to be the only goal of the game and handed Peter Taylor’s men a first league success of the season at the ninth attempt.

And Kandi says he enjoyed the weight of responsibility when stepping up to take that crucial spot-kick.

“With a late penalty, there’s always going to be pressure, but I really enjoy those moments,” he said.

“I feel like I was laughing during my run-up and as a striker, you live for those moments. To be able to put it in the top corner felt really good.

“It was a masterstroke from the manager to put me on when he did!” he joked.

“It felt good to be on the pitch and help the team win.”

The victory was Daggers’ first win of the season, with the club having been unsuccessful in their previous eight league games this term.

In that time, the Essex club may have delivered performances that had warranted three points, but Kandi was relieved the team finally ended that long wait for a success.

“It’s been a long time coming and I think we’ve put in a lot of performances this season that have deserved victories, but we’ve been unlucky to come away with nothing,” he added.

“The victory has been a long time coming and it’s good to finally get what we deserve.”
