Vanarama National League: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Salford City 0

Dagenham & Redbridge recorded their first clean sheet of the season with a 0-0 draw at home to Salford City in the Vanarama National League.

Despite seeing little of the ball in the opening half, a decent display in defence saw Daggers go into the break level, while the Ammies were reduced to 10 men after Danny Lloyd collected two bookings in the first period.

The Essex club performed better in the second period, but were unable to find the goal they so craved.

Following Monday’s defeat at Barnet, Daggers boss Peter Taylor elected to make two changes to his squad.

Luke Pennell and Ollie Harfield came in respectively for Gavin Hoyte and Lasmar Reynolds, who both dropped to the bench.

Rory Gaffney had an early sighter for Salford in the fifth when shooting from the edge of the box after cutting inside from the left, but the effort was comfortable for home custodian Elliot Justham.

The Daggers stopper was called upon again in the 20th minute, doing well to keep out a curling effort from Danny Whitehead from a central position some 25 yards out.

It took until the 24th minute for the Essex club to register a shot on target, with a dipping half-volley from Matt Robinson from 18 yards testing away keeper Chris Neal.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead in the 28th minute when Adam Rooney chested in a Nathan Pond header from a corner on the line, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

There was another let off six minutes later when Rooney headed a cross from the left back across goal, which Daggers defender Ben Goodliffe had to clear behind for a corner which came to nothing.

Despite having plenty of the ball, City were resorting to take efforts from distance with Justham keeping out a 25-yard drive from Lois Maynard in the 38th minute.

Daggers were given a huge boost in the 42nd minute when Danny Lloyd was adjudged to have dived in the box and collected his second yellow card, leaving Salford with 10 men for the remainder of the game.

Taylor’s men nearly took full advantage in stoppage time at the end of the first period, but a vicious effort from just inside the area by Elliott Romain was straight at Neal.

That proved to be the last chance of the half as the sides heading down the tunnel level with the game goalless.

Daggers, though, did start the second half brighter, even if they were unable to create any meaningful chances to go with the improvement.

Despite that, they needed a fine show of bravery in the 60th minute to keep things level, with Justham diving at the feet of Rooney to deny the forward from close range after Gaffney crossed from the right.

With 13 minutes remaining, a cross from the right by Alexander McQueen found substitute Lamar Reynolds at the back post, but the resulting header was weak and easy for Neal.

In the 86th minute, a free-kick found Goodliffe at the back post and the defender headed the ball back across goal.

Substitute Tomi Adeloye rose highest to get on the end of the ball, but could not get enough power behind his header to overly trouble Neal.

Sadly Daggers were unable to create any more chance before the end as their wait for a first win continues, with their next match at home to Braintree Town on Tuesday night.

Daggers (3-5-2): Justham; Davey (Hoyte 32), Goodliffe, Pennell (Adeloye 69); McQueen, Robinson, Wright, Harfield, Gordon; Romain, Leighton (Renyolds 52).

Subs: Moore (GK), Donovan.

Salford (4-4-2): Neal; Wiseman, Piergianni, Pond, Touray; Lloyd, Maynard, Whitehead, Walker (Mafuta 63 (Hogan 86)); Gaffney (Rodney 63), Rooney.

Sent off: Lloyd 42 (second bookable offence).

Subs: Crocombe (GK), Haughton.

Attendance: 1,114 (including 85 Salford fans).

Referee: Lloyd Wood.
