Gulfer hails team after victory

Barkingside boss Gursel Gulfer hailed his side following their 2-1 win over Ryman North rivals Great Wakering last night.

A late goal by new signing Michael Spencer earned the hosts three valuable points at Cricklefield Stadium, following their 5-1 loss at Hornchurch at the weekend.

Gulfer said: “For the first time this season we played as a team.

“I said before I wanted at least six points from the next three games. After this performance we are halfway there.”

The home side took the lead early in the second half through Jonathan Nzengo, but Rovers equalised just after the hour mark when Tony Jacobs netted his first goal of the campaign.

Then, just when it looked as if the points were going to be shared, new boy Spencer came up trumps for the hosts.

The win moved Gulfer’s men up to 18th place in the table and gives them some breathing space from the relegation places.

The manager was full of praise for his new recruit, adding: “I rated his performance as a nine out of 10.

“He brought something different to the team and he has this ability to make everyone else play better.”

Barkingside’s next game is away to strugglers Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.
