Barkingside boss Michael Walther says morale is still positive despite finding themselves in an Essex Senior League relegation battle, writes Jacob Ranson.

Side travel to Wadham Lodge on Saturday (3pm) as they look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Enfield and get away from the drop zone.

Walther’s have eight games left to ensure they remain in the league and they have back-to-back fixtures against Lodge as they look to steer clear of the bottom four.

“I think the squad morale is still very good and everyone is still positive,” Walther said.

“It’s a game we can’t really afford to lose because if you look at our position in the league and look at where they are, we have to beat them.

“We also have them in the reverse fixture on Monday and we must get something at least from both of the matches.”

Former Clapton manager Walther is expecting a tough test against their fellow strugglers, but is confident in his side’s defensive play.

“I’m expecting a tough game as they beat Waltham Forest not so long ago, they also have a few players who played for me at Clapton in Sherwin Stanley and Paul Oshin, who are both very experienced players,” added Walther.

“Sherwin knows how to use his body, he is physical and knows how to finish. With him and Paul they will be looking to use their power against our young lads.

“We will want to try playing a bit higher up in this game so we don’t have to defend in our box too often against them two.”

Walther is also hoping his side start getting some more luck as mistakes are still costing them in matches.

“We’ve got a group of young players who show lots of potential and are very good,” he said.

“The problem for us is one player can make one mistake and we’re getting punished for it.

“We’re hoping we start to get a bit more luck with that in the coming weeks.”

He also revealed that he is hoping to have his whole squad available for selection ahead of the clash.

Barkingside also host Wadham Lodge at Cricklefield Stadium on Monday evening (7.45pm).
