Barkingside manager Michael Walther blames his team selection as they crashed out of the FA Vase with a 3-2 defeat to Whitton United.

Walther admits he may have picked the wrong side as they fell to a third straight defeat against the Eastern Counties League Division One outfit.

The visitors took a 3-0 lead into the half-time break and despite a late fight back from Walther’s men it wasn’t enough to keep them in the cup competition.

“I think the last two games we’ve played against Whitton and Redbridge we have not started well and ended up going behind then having to claw our way back,” he said.

“Both games when we’ve made substitutions we have ended up looking a better team.

“That’s always in the second-half when we make the changes, so looking at that as a manager I have to take the blame for that and put more thought into picking the starting eleven.”

Whitton scored after ten minutes through Franco Mallardo, then doubled their lead when Harry Wales found the net in the 23rd minutes, before making it 3-0 through Ryan Rampley and Walther admits the first-half performance wasn’t good enough.

“The first 45 minutes was embarrassing to come off 3-0 down it just wasn’t good enough.

“Maybe some of the boys aren’t up to the level, but as a manager I should spot that and not put us in that situation.”

Walther did pick up on the positives and believes his created plenty of chances in the second-half with his side scoring twice to bring them back into the match through Raphael Duyile and Tony Cookey.

“When we did make the right substitutions we looked good and created some good chances,” he admitted.

“Although we have lost three on the spin and it looks bad I think it’s only a little bit of tinkering that we need.

“I’m only looking at it right now in the way that it’s a new side and a new club for everybody, so at this moment there is going to be some ups and downs.

“We just need to make sure we don’t get down hearted by it.”
