Ryman North: Heybridge 1 Barkingside 0

A superb display by young loan keeper Tyler McCarthy was not enough for Barkingside as they were edged out by Heybridge at Scraley Road.

Gursel Gulfer’s Barkingside travelled in good spirits, having taken seven points from a possible nine in their battle to avoid the drop from Ryman North.

But Lewis Godbold’s goal on the stroke of half time was enough to send them back to Cricklefield empty handed.

Dagenham & Redbridge academy keeper McCarthy made two early saves to deny Jack Barham, before Barkingside forced Danny Sambridge to make a routine save on nine minutes.

Heybridge’s Matthew Pooley shot across goal after a good run on the left, while the visitors were high and wide with further efforts as play evened out.

But Swifts were awarded a penalty on 35 minutes, only for 17-year-old McCarthy to keep out George Cole’s spot-kick with a fine save.

Side rallied to create further chances of their own in the lead-up to half time, but the deadlock was broken when Godbold netted for the hosts.

McCarthy kept out Barham’s header 11 minutes into the second half, before Gulfer sent Kofi Halliday on for Luke With just past the hour mark.

Alfie Wren was also thrown into the mix soon after, but Swifts went close to doubling their lead when Barham’s low cross just evaded Cole.

McCarthy pushed out a curling effort from Pooley with 12 minutes remaining, but Side went agonisingly close to levelling when substitute Halliday saw his shot pushed onto the crossbar by Sambridge.

The visitors kept pushing forward in search of a late equaliser, but Heybridge held on for three precious points in the fight for survival.

Defeat leaves Barkingside next to bottom, six points adrift of safety with only seven matches remaining.

Barkingside: McCarthy, Birch, Wright, Adebayo, Smith, Nichol-Wilson, Ademiluyi (Wren 69), Lataaya, With (Halliday 62), Spencer, Foxley. Unused subs: Greenslade, Mills, Amoaro.
